THE LOCAL INN, WEST RYDE

In May 1962 an application was made to the Licensing Court for the removal of the License from THE WOOLBROKERS ARMS HOTEL, PYRMONT to a new hotel in WEST RYDE.
In June 1962, before Licensing Court Magistrate MR EJ FURREST and MR JM KELLY, approval for the transfer of license was granted and the Hotel was to be built.
Five WEST RYDE residence objected to the proposal of the new Hotel, among the businessmen whom supported the proposal were MR RJ HIGGINS of Ashley Buckingham’s and Pharmacist JAMES DONOVAN both of West Ryde.
The Hotel was to be built on the corner of West Parade and Anthony Road West Ryde at a cost of £180000.

Ryde council approved the application for the Hotel in October 1962, and by early January 1963 work on the Hotel was making rapid progress, by July 1963 plans were being made for the official opening of the Hotel to take place in September.
The Interior design was selected by Miss Sandra Willis of Anthony Hordens and Sons Pty Ltd.
All Manchester and Electrical goods were supplied by Buckingham’s Pty Ltd.

Features to the Hotel included a large all weather beer garden to the first floor, air conditioned lounge and saloon bars and a 50 sq room on the lower level for conventions and functions, 15 room accommodation and a 3 lane drive through bottle shop accessed from Anthony Road.

On completion the Hotel had a frontage of 158 feet to West Pde and 100feet along Anthony Rd.

In June 1963 the Hotel name was decided over a glass of beer by a retired businessman and the owner/builder Bill Graf: “THE LOCAL INN” was suggested by Mr. John Roach.

In August 1963 Mr. Graf place an advert in “THE LEADER” for a £5 open order on any West Ryde store to suggest a name for the entertainment room in the Hotel basement. This was won by Mrs. Pat Elliot of Victor St Ermington with the name “THE LOCAL INN RECEPTION HALL”

The LOCAL INN was officially opened by the MAYOR OF RYDE; ALDERMAN C.M.CUTLER on Thursday 26th September 1963, the hotel was officially open for business at 10am that day.
First beer pulled by the proprietor Mr. Bill Graf for Mr. J.B Burrell, Tooth and Company Representative.
The Managers at time of opening were Mr.  & Mrs. George Grassick.
At the time of opening at THE LOCAL INN the motto was “SERVICE AND CIVILITY”

PRESENT
In 2010 the AHA awarded Ryedales Tavern "Best Pub Tab".
